Search used to be a page of links. In 2026 a growing share of discovery happens inside assistants — people ask a question and get a synthesised answer with a source attached. That changes what a website has to do to be found: it must be fast enough to be cited, structured enough to be parsed and specific enough to be answered.
Fast pages get cited
An assistant that assembles an answer from the web prefers sources it can retrieve quickly and parse reliably. The same Core Web Vitals that matter for rankings — fast Largest Contentful Paint, no layout shift, real performance budgets — are now the price of admission for being quotable. A slow, shifting page is not just a ranking problem; it is an answer-quality problem.
Semantic structure is the new schema
Use real headings, one clear h1, descriptive link text and tables for tabular facts. This is old-fashioned HTML discipline with a new payoff: assistants split pages into fragments, and a well-labelled fragment is far more likely to survive intact into an answer. Add structured data where it earns its keep — products, organisations, FAQs — so facts are stated once, machine-readably.
Add llms.txt
An llms.txt file at the root is a plain, explicit map of what your site covers — the AI-accessible counterpart to robots.txt and the sitemap. It is cheap, harmless and increasingly expected: a short file that points assistants at your best pages and tells them what each one is for. For a catalogue or a knowledge base, it is the difference between being discovered through the front door and being discovered through the right door.
Write content that can be quoted
Assistants quote text that stands alone. Write answers that make sense lifted out of context: state the fact, give the date, name the source, keep the conclusion in the same paragraph. FAQ-style content, worked examples and short, precise product descriptions are disproportionately quotable. A paragraph that works as an answer is worth more than a page that only works as a whole.
Treat assistants as a channel
Whatever the future of any one model or search interface, the underlying shift is durable: machines now read your site on the visitor's behalf. Fast rendering, semantic HTML, structured facts and answerable content are channel strategy, not optimisation. Build them once and you stay visible as the interface changes underneath you.
